Let's see where we are heading. Data is growing rapidly: Gartner predicts that there will be 2 Billion PCs by 2014. That's 2 Billion hard drives or roughly 2 zettabytes (2 billion terabytes) of storage. Given the explosion of data and the trend to move this data to the cloud, one wonders whether it's sustainable and cost-efficient to store all this data centrally. Even if one of the largest cloud players like Google were able to quadruple its capacity by 2014, it would take at least 100 “quadruple Googles” to store and serve this capacity.

Using data centers is a great infrastructure simplification, but it is inefficient and expensive. Costs grow as your data grows and increasing disk density is not going to solve this problem because disks are a very small fraction of data center costs.
